Today is the last day to provide public comments against some proposed rule changes by the Department of Health and Human Services. This rule change would attempt to erase protections that prohibit government-funded programs from discriminating against the people they serve based on sexual orientation and gender identity, and in some cases religion.
Examples that could come from this rule:
- Allow federally-funded senior centers to refuse to allow legally married same-sex couples or Muslim older adults to participate in their programs;
- Allow a federally-funded home health aide program to refuse to care for a transgender older woman; and
- Allow a federally-funded adult daycare provider to continue to receive federal funding despite failing to address sexual harassment of the women it serves.
